Historic Facts

The Kiwanis Club of Peachtree Atlanta was chartered on August 9, 1967. The following individuals were charter members and are still active in our club:

Some significant historical facts about the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree, Atlanta:

1967 The Club was chartered under sponsorhip of the Kiwanis Clubs of Atlanta, Buckhead and Northside. Judge William C. O'Kelley was elected the first president.
1968 The Club held the first Law Day and Student Improvement Awards Programs.
1969 The Club admitted to membership its first African-American members: W. L. Calloway, Dr. A.M. Davis, Joel C. Stokes, and R. E. Thomas, Jr.
1971 Wiley Virden served as Lieutenant Governor of Division 1.
1972 The Club initiated the International Trip Program. The Club publication, "The Grits" received Best Bulletin Award from Kiwanis International.
1976 The Club started the Ms. Georgia Nursing Home Pageant. Stuart A. Peebles became Lieutenant Governor of Division 1.
1977 The Club instituted the Recovery Center Christian Dinner for the homeless.
1982 The Club organized a Key Club at Grady High School, and a Circle K Club at Morris Brown College. Kiwanis International recognized the Club with a Multiple Service Project Award.
1983 The Club initiated the Police Officer of the Year and Outstanding Citizen Awards, and the Brotherhood Prayer Breakfast program. George M. Scheer, Jr. was elected Lieutenant Governor of Division 1. Robert P. Vance and Hugh H. Howell, Jr. became Life Members of Kiwanis International.
1984 The Club sponsored a Key Club at Turner High School, a Builders Club at Inman Middle School, the Kiwanis Club of Midtown Atlanta and the Kiwanis Club of Government Walk Atlanta. Malcolm Brenner became a Life Member of Kiwanis International. The Club elected its first African-American president, Bob Threatt.
1985 The Club started the Outstanding School Administrator Award Program. George M. Scheer, Jr. was elected District Secretary-Treasurer, and James B. Pilcher became Lieutenant Governor of Division 1.
1986 The Marriott Hotel where the Club had met since 1967, became the Radisson Hotel Downtown. Club members planted trees at the Hotel on Courtland Street at International Boulevard. The Recovery Dinner served 600 guests, the largest group ever.
1987 The Club accepted women into membership. Mary Cook was the first woman to join the Club. A Twentieth anniversary celebration invited all past presidents back to the Club. George M. Scheer, Jr. became Governor of the Georgia District.
1988 The Club had a net gain of eleven members. Overall increase in attendance at Club meetings, division and district functions. Outstanding year for Interclubs. Assisted in starting a new International Club.
1989 The Club recruited 27 new members, and ended the year with 87 total membership. President Ron David personally recruited a record six new members.

The Major Emphasis Program focused on Youth. The Club sponsored several interview skills workshops and a job fair in the local high schools, providing assistance to more than 500 students. The Club was the winner of the District Multiple Service Projects Award in the Diamond category.

1990 Members were involved in leadership roles at the International level (George M. Scheer, Jr. was Chairman of Human & Spiritual Values). At the District Level, Steve Presser was Builders Club Chairman, Emory Mulling was Chair of Club Development and Charter 11, and James B. Pilcher was elected Secretary-Treasurer. James B. Pilcher received the Hixson Award.
1993 James B. Pilcher became Governor of the Georgia District. Ronni French served as Coordinator of the District Convention, and the Club was Host to the District Convention.
1994 The Club moved from its 27-year location at the Radisson Hotel to the Capital City Club.
1995 The Club joined forces with the Buckhead Club, Midtown Club, Northwest Club and the Galleria Club to host the First Annual Kiwanis Valentine Gala at the Capital City Club.
1996 Midtown Kiwanis Club decided to dissolve. President Hitt negotiated with Midtown to transfer club members to Peachtree Atlanta.
1997 Six members of the Midtown Kiwanis Club joined PAKC. President Bob Lambertson resigned because of a job transfer; President-elect Chuck Palmer took over mid-year.
1998 Ronni French became Lt. Governor of Division 1. PAKC was named Distinguished Club for 1997-98.
1999 Steve Presser became Lt. Governor of Division 1.
1999 Peachtree Atlanta goes online with club website – peachtreekiwanis.org.
2002 Bill Rabel instrumental in establishing a new program which recognizes the outstanding Police Officer of the Month from the local police precinct.
