April 30, 2002 Program

Our guest speaker today was Carl McNair, Assistant Director in the Office of Career and Job Search at Georgia State University and the brother of Dr. Ronald E. McNair who died along with six other astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. In sharing with us about his role at Georgia State University, African American astronauts, and the Ronald E. McNair Foundation, Mr. McNair stated the following:

  1. Carl is responsible for managing the fundraising and development campaign for GSU's new state-of-the-art Career Center which is scheduled to open later in 2002.
  2. Carl also manages the Internship Program which helps GSU students acquire real-world work experiences and serves as facilitator for development of skills in resume writing and interviewing.
  3. The Ronald E. McNair Foundation, Inc. was founded by Carl to develop and implement educational programs that motivate and encourage students to pursue careers in science, mathematics, and technology.
  4. The Foundation has set up several Challengers Clubs Space Camps and Challengers Club Science Mentoring Programs and helped to persuade Congress and the U.S. Department of Education to establish the Ronald McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program.
  5. Today, 156 McNair Programs reside at colleges and universities and over 15,000 McNair Scholars have participated in the McNair Achievement Program.
  6. Participation of African Americans as astronauts includes Gary Buford as being the first, Dr. Mae Jefferson as first female, and Dr. Bernard Harris as first Space Walker.
