February 10, 2004 Program

Our speaker this morning was J. Michael Robison, President and CEO of Lanier Parking Holdings, Inc. and founder of Atlanta Streetcar, Inc., a private, non-profit organization devoted to the creation of a streetcar line serving the Peachtree corridor from Buckhead to Five Points. In speaking to us about the Atlanta Streetcar Project, Mr. Robison's remarks included the following points:

  1. The purpose of the Project is to help motorist get to work places, shopping centers, etc. more quickly and safely through Atlanta by using bus and streetcar instead of individual vehicle. This is necessary, more so now than ever before, to accommodate a growing population in Metro Atlanta which presently is about 4.3 million and increasing about 1,100 weekly.
  2. A six-month feasibility study is being made by the executive committee. The projected cost of the Project ranges from $35 to $70 billion. The Project is expected to be finished by the year 2030.
  3. The initial streetcar line will be on Peachtree, extending from Five Points through Mid-Town to Buckhead. Other lines, such as to West End Village, will be constructed later.
