March 9, 2004 Program

Our speaker today was Dr. Matthew Grober who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Georgia State University. In sharing with us about Evolution, Heredity, and Environment, Dr. Grober's remarks included the following points:

  1. Three goals that all human life seeks to achieve are growth, survival, and reproduction.
  2. About 30% of our genes and about 70% of our environment make us do what we do or shape human behavior.
  3. Most of our genes come from our mother.
  4. Perfection is a goal to be pursued rather than attained because our world is dynamic and constantly changing. Adaptations are not perfect because they are made from whatever material is available.
  5. No one looks exactly like his/her parents.
  6. Females are pickier about choices they make than are males.
  7. Man shares a common ancestor with the chimpanzee.
  8. There are about 37 difference human cultures in the world today.
  9. About 5% of the human population is homosexual.
  10. Dominant countries don't last long.
  11. Most research being done today in America is funded by the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation. The focus is on applied research rather than pure research.
