March 16, 2004 Program
Our speakers today were Ms. Heather Himmel, Biologist and Ms. Christine Bean,
Geologist and Vice President of Education of the Fernbank Museum of Natural
History. In their presentation on "Discovery Chimpanzees: The Remarkable
World of Jane Goodall" the following points were noted:
-
Jane Goodall developed an acceptable relationship with Chimpanzees in Tangier,
Africa, which provided her the opportunity to study their behavior.
-
The population of the "great apes" is about150,000. The chimpanzee female
is pregnant for about 8 ½ months before she delivers a set of triplets
or quadruplets. The chimp is weaned from mother at about age 5; grows to
about 4 feet tall; weighs about 175 pounds; and lives to be about 55 years
old. Antelopes and small monkeys are major food items of the chimp and the
male chimpanzee dominates the society.
-
Even through the zoo is a good refuge for the chimps, the best location is
their natural habitat.
-
When visiting Fernbank's exhibit "Discovering Chimpanzees", there is the
opportunity to see a film and meet the chimps in their forest-like setting.
A visitor can also talk, walk and eat with the chimps.
-
Even though the chimp is 98% human, the most human like animal is the bonobo.
-
Fernbank will have the Goodall exhibit until the later part of April and
the film until July.
-
Atlanta has the largest primate center in the USA.
-
Fernbank receives 450,000 visitors a year; has a budget of $9.5 million a
year; and depends solely on membership, donations, and fund-raising for its
revenue.
