June 8, 2004 Program

Our guest speaker today was Mark Dougherty who is Director of the Lockheed Martin F/A-22 Business Development Team and a Retired Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. In sharing with us about the F/A-22 Raptor, Col Dougherty noted the following points:

  1. The F/A022 Raptor project began in 1984 and it is expected to be completed by 2013 by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company.
  2. Each plane costs about $135 million. Even though there is a need for at least 381 planes, approval has been given to build 277.
  3. Some major characteristics of the F/A-22 are these: (a) hard to detect, (b) supersonic speed, (c) very high altitude, (d) one pilot, (e) multi-mission capability, and (f) 90% tactical and 10% technical in operation.
  4. The current budget for production is $70 billion. The $500 million annual payroll impacts thirteen Congressional Districts in Georgia.
  5. Even though the Raptor contributes significantly to air power dominance in the world by the United States, Russia and China are our closest competitors.

Recognition

President Lantz commended for a job-well-done two Policemen of the Month from Zone 5 of APD. Dusty presented Sgt. Briggs who noted that Officer Abraham pursued and captured a criminal who had assaulted a female and fled in the victim's car. In relating the capture of another criminal by Officer Stack, Sgt. Briggs noted the offenses included drug store robbery, auto theft, firing at Officer Stack during the auto chase, and barricading himself in an illegally entered home. Recognition was given also to Jimmy Henderson and wife Edith who celebrated their 65th wedding Anniversary on June 1, 2004. Jim is a Charter and Life member of Peachtree Atlanta Kiwanis Club and Edith, a Landscape Architect, was the seamstress who sewed Award Patches on our Banners. President Lantz encourages us to call Jimmy at 404-351-5155 or visit him at 250 Brighton Road, NE. Our Club's deepest sympathy was expressed to Member Wortman in passing of her father.
