January 3, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Ms. Jan Nelson, Chief Operating Officer of Second Wind Dream and a Kiwanian with the Roswell Chapter. In sharing with us about Second Wind Dreams, Ms. Nelson's remarks included following points:

  1. Second Wind Dreams was founded in 1997 and it has more than 450 member eldercare facilities in 40 states, Canada and India.
  2. It was Dr. P. K. Beville, the founder, who became aware of the high rate of depression and dissatisfaction among residents as well as the increasing rate of staff turnover in nursing homes and senior communities and had a dream to improve those conditions.
  3. The mission of Second Wind Dreams is to enhance the quality of life for those living in eldercare communities and change the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams and innovative educational programs.
  4. Illustrative of the type of dreams being made to come true are these:
    1. To see such as an old friend.
    2. To have such as a new dress.
    3. To experience such as flying an airplane.
  5. We can help Second Wind Dreams in several ways such as making a financial contribution and/or volunteering our time and expertise.
