February 22, 2005 Program
Our guest speaker today was Sadie W. Holt, President of American Rosie the
Riveter Association. In sharing with us about her organization, Ms. Holt's
remarks included the following points:
-
American Rosie the Riveter Association was organized in 1998 to serve three
major purposes:
-
To recognize and preserve the history and legacy of working women, including
volunteers, during World War II.
-
To promote cooperation and fellowship among such members and their descendants.
-
To further the advancement of patriotic ideals, excellence in the work place,
and loyalty to the United States of America.
-
Eligibility for membership in the Association includes the following:
-
Women whose work during the 1941-1945 period was considered to be important
in the defense of America.
-
Employment of any sort in an industry, business, or governmental agency that
was directly related to the War effort.
-
Employment, including self-employment, in a capacity usually held by a man,
thus releasing the man for military duty.
-
Participation on a sustained basis in one or more volunteer activities related
to the War effort.
-
Women who perform the work are known as Rosies, the female descendants are
Redbuds, and the male auxiliary members are Rivets.
-
The Association has produced two books, namely: "103 Rosie the Riveter Stories,"
and "Rosie the Riveter Celebration Cookbook."
-
The Association, which is headquartered at FDR's Little White House in Warm
Springs, Georgia, has as its top priority to establish a National Monument
for Women in Washington, D.C.
Visitor
We were delighted to have visiting with us today Terrill, Chief Development
Officer at the University of South Carolina (Dusty).
