March 8, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Barbara Olasov Rothbaum, RhD and ABPP, Associate Professor and Director of Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program in the Department of Psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine. Some of the major points noted from Dr. Rothbaum's presentation on "Using the Virtual Reality World to Help People in the Real World to Cope with their Fears, Anxieties and Addictions" included the following points:

  1. Virtual Realty Exposure Therapy involves placing a patient in an interactive computer environment which provides a sense of presence in disturbing experiences encountered in the real world.
  2. Some of the hardware used in the environment are a head-mounted display, a computer, a monitor, and a smell machine.
  3. Fear of high places such as bridges, balconies, elevators, and airplanes, post traumatic stress disorders resulting from serious accidents and war, addictions such as alcohol and drugs, and public speaking represent a few of the kinds of problems being treated by Virtual Reality Exposure.
  4. Each patient is treated individually in his own environment and allowed to progress at one's own pace.
  5. Collected data tend to show that Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy is more effective and efficient than the Standardize or Traditional Mode of Treatment.
  6. Additional information about Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy may be secured from this website: www.virtuallybetter.com.
