April 5, 2005 Program
Our guest speaker today was Terri D. Beck, Executive Director of "Everybody
Wins! Atlanta". In discussing with us the program of "Everybody Wins!, Ms.
Beck noted the following points:
-
A 1985 national study done by the National Institute of Education's Commission
on Reading found that "The single most important activity for building the
knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children."
-
Founded in 1991, "Everybody Wins!" is a non-profit organization that is dedicated
to promoting children's literacy through reading programs with caring
individuals.
-
The program serves thousands of at-risk public elementary school students
nationwide (about 42 cities) with its Power Lunch program.
-
Once a week, Reading Mentors and students share conversation and good books
one-on-one over school lunch in a reading and mentoring program named Power
Lunch.
-
Volunteers come from a variety of public and private sector groups.

The Honorable Paul Howard - Fulton County District Attorney |
Recognition
President Ray recognized Past Governor George Scheer who shared with us pertinent
information about a Living Will which is "a written directive prepared by
a competent person instructing his/her physician to withhold or withdraw
life-sustaining procedures in the event of a terminal condition, a coma,
or a persistent vegetative state." George offers his legal service freely
to any member interested in preparing a Living Will. Interclub Chairman Sandy
noted that we had a successful interclub with Downtown Atlanta on March 29th.
President Ray asked each of us to "skip a meal" and give the cost of the
meal to Kiwanis International Foundation.
Pin Violation
Our Compassionate Mel noted that all was well with the membership.
