April 12, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Michael J. Cain, Owner of Roswell Publishing Company and Co-author with Ed Negri of "Herren's, An Atlanta Landmark: Past/Present and Future." In sharing with us about Ed Negri and Herren's Restaurant, Mr. Cain noted the following points:

  1. Ed Negri is the son of the late Guido Negri who purchased the restaurant from Charles Herrin in 1939.
  2. Ed took over management of Herren's in 1942 after the death of his father.
  3. Even though Ed graduated from Georgia Tech in 1947 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he developed Herren's into an elite restaurant, comparable to the Capital City Club and the Atlanta Athletic Club during his forty-one years in the business.
  4. Among the many contributions made to improve life and living in Metro Atlanta, Ed is credited with having the first restaurant to become racially integrated, saving the Fox Theater and Wren's Nest; and organizing the first all-class reunion of Boys' High in Atlanta since its closing in 1947.
  5. Ed was a very active member of our Club, Peachtree Atlanta, for several years.
  6. Ed closed Herren's Restaurant in 1987 and later moved with his beautiful wife, Jane, to Ellijay where he is still active in the real estate industry.
