April 19, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Luis J. Perez-Eguiarte , an immigration attorney with the international legal firm of Kilpatrick Stockton in Atlanta and a long-standing leader of the Georgia Hispanic community. In sharing with us about immigration and the Hispanic community, Attorney Luis noted the following points:

  1. The population of the Hispanic community in Georgia has increased three-fold during the past few years and currently stands at about one million. Across the USA, the Hispanic population is about twelve million.
  2. Many Hispanics come to the United States as illegal immigrants who are seeking job opportunities.
  3. Many indignities suffered by the illegal immigrants include the denial of access to green cards, public education, public health care, driver's license, etc.
  4. There is a need for reform in the immigration law that allows for a Welcome Guest Program with free movement and humane treatment of immigrants between their country and the United States.
