May 10, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was The Honorable Paul L. Howard, Jr., Fulton County District Attorney. Among the many facts about crime in Fulton County that were shared by Mr. Howard, please note the following:

  1. Of the 330 cases prosecuted during 2004, 76 were homicides. 70 percent of the cases resulted in conviction.
  2. 35-65 percent of crimes committed are drug-related.
  3. Given the ease with which drug offenders are freed on bond and are exonerated, 55 percent of law enforcement officers feel that it is a waste of time to arrest such offenders.
  4. The average sentence given for a rape crime is 17 years.
  5. There are 54 charges lodged against Bryan Nichols for whom the death penalty is being sought.
  6. To minimize the backlog of cases awaiting prosecution, there is a need to improve the efficiency of the State Crime Lab and assigning more judges to handle drug-related offenses.
