May 17, 2005 Program

Our speaker today was Paul Clements who is General Manager of Sales at AirTran Airlines. In sharing with us about the airline industry and AirTran, Mr. Clements noted the following points:

  1. AirTran began operation in 1999 and has headquarters in Orlando, Florida and a hub in Atlanta.
  2. AirTran is the second largest airline, Delta being the largest, at the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
  3. When AirTran moves into an area, fares of other airlines drop about 30 percent.
  4. 70 percent of booking flights with AirTran are done by internet.
  5. 25 percent of all airlines are in bankruptcy due to factors such as 911 and rising fuel costs.
  6. Three of the most profitable airlines in the United States are Jet Blue, Southwest, and AirTran.
  7. For the near future, there will be more merger/consolidation of airlines.
