June 14, 2005 Program

Our speaker today Dale Russell, Fox 5 News Investigative Reporter, head of the eight-member Investigative Team, former magazine writer and radio reporter, and recipient of 50 awards, including the Peabody Award. In sharing with us about the work of an Investigative Reporter, Mr. Russell's remarks included the following points:

  1. During the 19th Century, Investigative Reporters were called Muckrakers, those who search for and publicize in mass media real or alleged corruption by public officials, businessmen, etc.
  2. Investigative Reporters view their mission in the following manner: "Holding the powerful accountable"; "Serving as an auditor for the people"; and "Rooting out waste and fraud."
  3. Fox 5 News Investigative Program is believed to be the only one in America that has existed for 28 years without interruption.
  4. Some of the high profile cases covered by Fox 5 include the 1996 Olympic Bombing, Wayne Williams and the Missing and Murdered Children, and 911.
  5. The careers of many public officeholders and businessmen have been ruined and millions of tax dollars have been recovered by Investigative Reporters.
