June 21, 2005 Program

Our speaker today was Chris Adams, Director of the Georgia Capital Defense Program and the son of a Kiwanian who was a member of the Carrollton Club. In sharing with us about the Capital Defense Program, Attorney Adam's remarks included the following points:

  1. The Capital Defense Program exists to provide adequate legal counsel for an indigent criminal who has committed a capital offense. Even though the law was made in 2003, it was not funded until 2004. The current budget for the program is $7 million plus.
  2. There are 112 persons, one of which is a female, who are on death row, the largest in the United States.
  3. A prisoner sentenced to life is imprisonment is cheaper maintained ($78,000 annually) than is one who is given the death penalty which can linger on and on for several years during the appeal process.

Recognition

President Ray recognized Ronni who reminded us of the Annual Picnic at the Lake Hartwell home of Mr. & Mrs. Kerscheval, beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 25. Membership Chairperson Sherry said that she is still counting on us to invite prospective members to our meetings. President Ray called our attention to the recent passing of our Past President, Frank L. Rozelle, Jr., and Buckhead Club Secretary, Earl Williams, who had a 55-year perfect attendance. May their souls rest in peace and their families be comforted.

Our Compassionate Mel, along with the rest of us, was shocked by the speechlessness of Bill and George.
