June 28, 2005 Program

Our speaker today was Jeffrey S. Swanagan, Executive Director of the Georgia Aquarium. In sharing with us about the Georgia Acquarium, Mr. Swanagan and his accomplice, Joe Handy who is Director of Visitor Services, noted the following points of information:

  1. In developing the Aquarium, ideas were gathered from several sources including many veterinarians and an architect.
  2. The Aquarium covers the size of a football field and requires use of five million gallons of water.
  3. Compared to other aquariums in America which have only ten to twenty thousand fish, the Aquarium will contain 100,000 fish.
  4. Two whale shark fish, named Ralph and Norton, are unique to the Georgia Aquarium. At birth, they are only several inches long, but do attain a size of 45 feet when fully mature.
  5. The Aquarium's physical structure contains a ballroom which will comfortably seat 1,000 persons and also provides for an education and technology floor teaching school children and youth.
  6. The Aquarium will be opened officially on November 23, 2005 and price for attendance will be about $20 per person.
  7. Logo for the Aquarium is an orange-colored fish called Dobo.
  8. During the next five weeks, the economic impact of the World of Coke and the Georgia Aquarium for Metropolitan Atlanta will be $1 billion.
  9. Of the 45 aquariums in the United States, the Georgia Aquarium is the largest.
