July 19, 2005 Program

Our speaker today was Joe Kelly, a student of Shakespeare and History, a member of Peachtree Atlanta, and our Club's Poet Laureate. In sharing with us about the "Spiritual Warfare and Shakespeare's MacBeth," the following points were noted:

  1. The MacBeth story reflects a profound vision of the nature of evil and the struggles of the human soul.
  2. General MacBeth had been told by three witches that he would become Baron of Cawdor and, later, become King of Scotland.
  3. MacBeth was influenced by his wife, Lady MacBeth, to move quickly and take over the kingdom which he did by murdering King Duncan.
  4. The personality of King MacBeth changed radically from being a person of strong but imperfect moral sense to that of a person who would stop at nothing to get and keep what he wants.
  5. After becoming fearful and lustful for more power, King MacBeth slew his good friend, Banguo, and several other persons.
  6. The strain of her horrid memories resulted in Lady MacBeth losing her mind and committing suicide.
  7. King MacBeth was finally defeated by the army of Malcolm (the son of King Duncan) and slain by Nobleman McDuff.
  8. Some important quotes included:
    1. A word spoken by King MacBeth after hearing about the death of Lady MacBeth (Act 5, Scene 5, MacBeth):
"Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player
And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
      Signifying nothing."
    2. Biblical Scriptures relevant to MacBeth as noted by Mr. Kelly:
      1. "As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him." (John 13:27 NIV)
      2. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Ephesians 6:12 NIV)

Future Speakers

July 26th   Mack Secord, Angel of Flight

Recognition

President Ray recognized Missi and Sgt. Shepherd for presentation of Officers of the Month from APD, Zone V. Sgt. Shepherd noted that Officers Tony and Carl responded immediately to a call to check out an apartment that had been broken into. Two suspects indulging in cocaine were arrested. The officers were congratulated and awarded certificates by President Ray. George reported on the International Convention, noting that he had a wonderful time in Honolulu and also noting that a Resolution passed which places on the International Board of Trustees, a non-voting member with financial expertise. Sherry says let's keep inviting others so that the growth continues. Some of us still think that George and Mel could be twin brothers.

Pin Violation

Missi quickly obliged Our Compassionate Mel.

Kiwanis Education

Kiwanis was a men's organization until 1987. Now we have more than 60,000 female members, including one of every seven club presidents, a growing number of district governors, and members of the International Board.

President Ray's Quote

-- Winston Churchill
