July 26, 2005 Program
Our guest speaker today was Mack Secord, a volunteer pilot with Angel Flight
of Georgia and a fellow Kiwanian. Mr. Secord shared with us many pertinent
facts about Angel Flight of Georgia which included the following:
-
Angel Flight was established in 1984 by Jim Shafer to provide flights to
and from treatment facilities for patients afflicted with ailments such as
genetic birth defects, cancer, post trauma stress disorders, lime disease,
etc.
-
This volunteer, free service has grown significantly from fifty (50) fulfilled
missions during 1990-1993 to 1201 fulfilled missions in 2004.
-
Age-range of patients has extended from age 4 to age 94, and sixty percent
of the patients have been children.
-
Seven Southeastern states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee) constitute the geographical area
covered by Angel Flight.
-
Angel Flight is a tax-exempt organization that depends upon volunteers and
financial contributions from individuals, corporations, businesses, foundations,
and other donors.
Visitors
Sherry was somewhat disappointed by the absence of visitors who are most
valuable as a resource for recruitment of new members.
