August 9, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Mike Garrett, President and CEO of Georgia Power Company. President Garrett shared with us several facts about Georgia Power Company which included the following:

  1. The company provides services in 153 Georgia counties and has offices in 123 counties. Fifty-four percent of the customers live in metro Atlanta.
  2. The company emphasizes that services be rendered in a courteous manner and at an affordable rate. The cost of services for the average consumer is about 15 percent below the national level.
  3. The demand for electrical energy is increasing because of growing competition from countries like China and growth in population such as the 100,000 annual rate in Georgia.
  4. The development of more nuclear energy plants (each of which costs about $9 billion and takes about six years to build) seems to be the best answer for gaining independence from current sources of energy.
  5. The work force of Georgia Power Company consists of 8500 workers, all of whom have at least a high school education and have passed a competency test. The workers are encouraged to get involved in community service.
