August 16, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Ann Taylor Boutwell, docent at Margaret Mitchell House. Ms. Boutwell shared with us several points about Peggie Margaret Mitchell which included the following:

  1. Margaret was born in the old Fourth Ward near the home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Atlanta and had two brothers.
  2. The schools she attended were the Boulevard School, Washington Seminary, and Smith College.
  3. John Marsh, husband number three, was a journalist who was helpful in developing the classic publication, "Gone With The Wind."
  4. Margaret was involved in christening two ships, namely the USS Alabama and the USS Savannah.
  5. She was a philanthropist to Morehouse College by financing the education of more than fifty medical students and endowing the Margaret Mitchell Chair.
  6. Ms. Mitchell began writing "Gone With The Wind" in 1926 which was finished and published in 1936 and enjoyed a sale of more than one million copies during the six months that followed.

Recognition

President Ray recognized Sandy who noted that a successful interclub was held with Downtown Atlanta. President Ray noted three things about the District Convention: 1. The proposed amendment to hold each club responsible for three delegates to the District Convention failed. 2. Lt. Governor Ronnie French was inducted to serve Division I during 2005-2006. 3. Top officials elected were Governor Johnny Johnson, Governor-Elect Dewey Smith, and Secretary Treasurer Mike McGuire.

We wish Happy Birthday to August Babies John Busby (30), Tim Kerchaval (21), and Connier Weatherby (19).

Pin Violation

George's honesty would not let him be excluded from the company of John and Sandy as they were taking care of Our Compassionate Mel.

Kiwanis Education

There were 12,267 international students who contributed $248 million to the economy of Georgia during 2002-2003.
