September 6, 2005 Program
Our guest speaker today was William F. Moon, Principal and one of the six
Founders of the International Community School. In sharing with us several
facts about the International Community School, Mr. Moon's remarks included
the following:
-
The International Community School was created by six fellow-educators in
2002 as a charter school in DeKalb County with the mission to serve refugee,
immigrant, and local children, providing a superb educational foundation
in a multi-ethnic setting.
-
Although a Charter School that is public with DeKalb County, the International
Community School is smaller and self-ministered, offering parents and teachers
more involvement in curriculum, staffing, etc.
-
The school has a program that serves the needs of 270 children in grades
kindergarten through 4th, adding a grade each year.
-
The school maintains a 50/50 American to immigrant mix. The immigrant students
come from more than 30 different countries.
-
The students have scored in the top third of DeKalb County Schools on state
standardized tests.
-
The International Community School gets $1.8 million of its $2.2 million
budget from DeKalb County and state government. The rest comes from private
donations. Eighty-five percent of the students qualify for participation
in Title 1 funds. For further information about the International Community
School, go to
