September 13, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Harold R. Donovant, Deputy Chief of the Atlanta Police Department and Commander of Field Operations Division. In sharing with us relevant information about the Atlanta Police Department, Deputy Chief Donovant's remarks included the following points:

  1. The overall crime rate in Atlanta has declined to its lowest level since 1960.
  2. A career ladder has been established in APD to provide opportunities to advance from within.
  3. The recently adopted Pan Handle ordinance will be enforced aggressively and in a friendly manner.
  4. Chief Richard James Pennington holds weekly accountability meetings with his commanders and other top-level staff members.
  5. A monthly meeting is held with law-enforcement departments of adjoining municipalities.
  6. The APD plans on sending support to Mississippi during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

We were delighted to have visiting with us Ms. Lori Goldblatt (Director of Catering, Sheraton Atlanta Hotel) and family members of Michael England (wife, Sheri, children, Morgan, Alex and Sam, father, Elgin, and sister, Debbi) and APD officers (Sgt. Sheperd, Sgt. Briggs, Sgt. Ferguson, and Maj. Hagin)

Recognition

President Ray presented Dr. Bill to conduct the Officer of the Year Recognition Program. After expressing thanks to committee members, Missi and Dusty, Dr. Bill introduced Sgt. Briggs who cited Honoree Michael England for his outstanding work as a burglar officer which included capturing "Spider Man" and "Sexy Rib", each of which led to the arrest of several other burglars. President Ray congratulated Officer England for having done an outstanding job and presented him a framed certificate and a one night package and stay at the Atlanta Sheraton Hotel. Interclub Chairman Sandy expressed gratitude to those (Ray, Bill, Bob T. and Sandy) who helped make for a successful interclub with Northside Presbyterian.
