Our guest speaker today was Lewis Regenstein, a descendant of Major Raphael Jacob Moses who was given the responsibility to execute the Final Order given by General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. According to Mr. Regenstein, that Final Order was, in effect, to take the $40,000.00 in silver and gold bullion, which was the last measure of the Confederate wealth, from Washington, Georgia to Augusta, Georgia, to help thousands of defeated Rebels who were struggling with poverty, sickness, and other disabilities. Because of the fear of robbery, several guards were hired to provide protection during the delivery of the funds. Major Moses, by the way, is given credit for being the Father of Georgia's Peach Industry. More information about the Final Order story can be found in the references of I. W. Avery's "A History of Georgia and Mel Young's "Last Order of the Lost Cause."
