November 29, 2005 Program
Our guest speaker today was George Goldman who shared with us the importance
of having a survival plan for dealing with disasters. Points included in
Mr. Goldman's remarks were the following:
-
Having a survival plan for dealing with disasters provides you with the
opportunity to think more clearly, act with more conviction, feel safer.
-
There are more than 35 kinds of disasters which may be placed in one of three
categories, namely: a) natural or weather-related, such as a hurricane or
earthquake; b) man-made disasters, such as air pollution and cyber attacks;
and c) acts of terrorism, such as assassinations and chemical weapon attacks.
-
During times of disasters, emergency aid is usually provided by agencies
such as governmental (firemen, police, and emergency medical and rescue crews)
and private (American Red Cross and Salvation Army).
-
Some personal things to be done in preparing for disasters are these:
-
Heed warnings, evacuation order, and other alerts from disaster officials.
-
Purchase a landline phone and cell phone.
-
Put in your grab and go bag items such as driver license, social security
card, and credit card.
-
Obtain a back safe deposit box and place in it valuable documents such as
marriage certificate, property deed, will, and stock and bond certificates.
