December 20, 2005 Program

Our guest speaker today was Dr. Arthur E. Ferdinand, Tax Commissioner of Fulton County. In sharing with us about the function and accomplishments of his office, Dr. Ferdinand's remarks included the following points:

  1. The Tax Commissioner has the responsibility for collecting taxes on Fulton County properties that have been assessed by the office of Tax Assessors.
  2. Tax collection rate has increased significantly, as high as 99.5 percent, during his administration as Tax Commissioner.
  3. As improvement has occurred in collection of taxes, tax payers have benefited from decrease in millage rate.
  4. Help is solicited from the public to defeat House Bill Number 921, which, if passed by the General Assembly, will limit greatly the authority of the Commissioner to collect from delinquent tax payers.
  5. Fulton County collects 27 percent of all public taxes collected in Georgia.

Recognition

President Sandy recognized the following persons:

  1. Ed, who presented at Boyce and the Officer of the Month from Zone Five of the Atlanta Police Department. The Officers represented a three-member team that has responsibility for working directly with the Homeless and Mentally Disturbed citizens. Among their outstanding accomplishments, the team provided food baskets for the Homeless, saved lives from a burning home, and made 60 arrests of persons engaged in illegal activities. The Officers were thanked by President Sandy.
  2. Dusty w ho proposed that the Club establish a "Pal" relationship with soldiers of the 48th Unit in Iraq.
  3. George, who noted that Roundtables will be held during the meetings of of December 27th and January 3rd in view of the Holiday Season.

Kiwanis Education

A club's books should he audited at least once a year by auditors named by the club's board of directors. The auditors may be club members, but not the Club secretary or treasurer.

  2. The Mid-winter Training Conference will be held March 4th at Wesleyan College in Macon.
  3. Kiwanis International Convention w1l1 take place in Montreal. Canada during June 28th-July 2nd.
  4. The date for the Georgia District Convention in Marietta is August 18th-20th.
  5. Coming soon is the announcement of Dusty and George about Our Annual Kiwanis Travel Abroad for 2006.
