When one thinks of theater, you probably think of ladies… ‘Snobbish, dressed to the nines’ and gentlemen with top hats attending a Broadway production in New York City. Right!!
Well not in Atlanta. We have Alliance Theater here… a shared, regional theater for all cultures in this diverse city of 4.5 million people who have moved here from all points on the globe.
Under the direction of this morning’s guest speaker, Ms. Susan V. Booth, Alliance Theater Artistic Director, Atlanta has reached a ‘mile stone’ in its quest for prominence in the ‘not for profit’ category of theaters.
Broadway bestowed its highest honor on the Alliance theater of Atlanta. The Alliance received the 2007 Tony Award for outstanding regional theater. Ms. Booth accepted this award on behalf the Alliance and said this award recognizes Atlanta’s support of “national Theater with a local address”.
For the Alliance, it was the culmination of 39 years of artistic work and Broadway recognition that Atlanta Alliance Theater, at the Woodruff Arts Center, is finally ‘on the map’. And it will receive national television exposure and attention from artists and audiences for years to come.
This Tony award marks the Alliance Theater as not just ‘local theater’ at its best, but also national theater at its best and this year’s Tony Award proves it to the theater world.
The Alliance Theater has earned a reputation for a high level of diversity in its offerings. This success is largely because of its strong reputation for doing work which is ‘community focused, yet nationally appealing.’
Well done, Alliance Theater. This Tony’s for you and your hard work. “Alliance Theater at the Woodruff…Where great theater lives…”
“It’s one of the tragic ironies of the theater that only one man in it can count on steady work…the night watchman”
