November 13, 2007 Program

Want to change your normal, daily routine…take a risk to change your life!!!! Try biking from Tybee Island, Georgia to Santa Monica, California in a month and a half.  It’s sure to change your perspective.

And that’s exactly what today’s 6 foot 5 inch, guest speaker did this past summer. Davis Pless, 16 year old student, formerly of the Lovett school here in Atlanta, biked a couple of thousand miles to prove to himself that he isn’t a quitter and he will follow through with plans.

Initially he started out with 14 other teenage bikers and two guides with a company that specializes in cross country biking trips.

Enduring 90 mile days on his bike, 35 pounds of gear, and 25 pounds of water containers, rising every morning at 3:15 a.m., he urged himself both mentally and physically to complete this trip.

Sometimes sleeping atop picnic tables or in tents, he and his biking group were determined to complete this trip. Encountering desert heat of 108-120 degree heat in the western deserts and aching every inch of the way up mountain tops, he and the group journeyed on.

Our speaker said he wanted, by taking the risks he did to complete this trip, to build his character.  Very mature reasoning for a 16 year old.  He knows what he wants.  He’s a very determined young man.  And he wants to go to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Is this an ‘admiral’ in the making!
