January 29, 2008 Program

Tuesday morning's speaker was Mr. Alex Branch, a semi-retired businessman who operates a rare map, print, and bookshop called the 'Grey Parrot Gallery' in Buckhead.

What's so remarkable about that you say? Well he found a rare 1847 Mexican map which shows a city in North Georgia called 'Atalanta' not Atlanta!  And the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was so interested, the newspaper wrote an interesting article concerning his discovery.

Alex now spends his time and effort  exploring one of the 'oldest questions of his hometown.' Where exactly does the name Atlanta from? It once was called Atalanta, then Terminus, then Marthasville and today our thriving metro city is called Atlanta.

Some say our city's name came from Greek mythology, the word Atlas, or Atalanta, a Greek Goddess.  Others say the city's name was 'feminized' from the word 'Atlantic' as in the 'Western and Atlantic Railroad'.  Alex doesn't agree with either explanation.

Go visit the Grey Parrot Gallery.  Discuss your viewpoint..and maybe even  your research with "The Grey Parrot" himself!  Alex would love to talk with you.
