February 12, 2008 Program

Thinking of ‘planting some seed’ this Spring, Gentlemen?  What kind of ‘seed’ are you thinking about?  The Theragenics Corporation is thinking about the ‘radioactive kind’.  Not the kind you’re thinking of!!!

This morning’s guest speaker was Mr. John Roesler, Director of Sales and Marketing from the Theragenics Corporation of Atlanta.

North of Lake Lanier, the Theragenics’ Company laboratory is busy manufacturing  microscopic radioactive ‘seeds’, about the size of six mm. mechanical pencil leads, used to neutralize and kill the deadly cells of prostate cancer, the ‘second-leading cause’ of all male cancer deaths in the United States.

The company’s concrete-block laboratory walls are more than 6 feet thick.  Geiger counters can be heard clicking away like machine guns while scientists and technicians, dressed in rubber gloves and paper gowns, stare intently through thick protective, glass windows at what looks like bits of graphite as they are packed into long needles or round containers.  These are employees of the company in a ‘fight’ against prostate cancer.

Many men are ‘closed mouthed’ about prostate cancer.  They don’t ‘vocalize’ their health problems nor do they create support groups like the ladies do.

1985 is a significant year in the fight against Prostate Cancer. The ‘Prostate Specific Antigen’ test was developed. Prior to this time, 29% of 766,860 cases reported were cancer positive.

This PSA test has saved countless men’s lives.  Before this test, men had very few indicators they were suffering from prostate cancer.  Now with proper testing and treatment, males can survive this disease, thanks to the research and development of this company.

In 2007, there was an estimated 222,000 cases of prostate cancer reported.  Thanks to this PSA test and appropriate treatment, less than 1% of men now die of prostate cancer, thanks to the Theragenics Corporation.

Just because we’re talking about ‘seed’, ladies, this doesn’t mean this is a ‘males only’ subject.  The men in your life, be they husbands, fathers, grandfathers, boyfriends, or ‘significant others’ face this potential medical problem.
