May 6, 2008 Program

This morning’s speaker was Mr. Philip Verre, the Chief Operating Officer of the High Museum of Art.  And guess what!  Chinese warriors are coming to visit Atlanta!  No kidding!

Atlanta’s High museum of Art is bringing a multi-million dollar art exhibit of China’s 2000 year old, terracotta army to Atlanta.  [November 16th, 2008-April 19th, 2009]

Chinese emperor Quin Shihuangdi, who reigned from 221—210BC, was one of the greatest rulers the world has ever known.  Before he died, a tomb complex of more than 25 square miles was constructed for his entrance into the afterlife by over 700,000 slaves.

And to protect his underground empire, he had constructed an army of terracotta soldiers to help him rule in the afterlife.

This mighty army was discovered by accident by a Chinese farmer who was digging a well for water.  He was bringing up buckets of earth to clear the hole in the well.  One of the buckets held the head of a terracotta soldier.  This discovery took place in 1974.

Close to 1,000 terracotta figures have been discovered and excavated from the tomb. It is estimated to hold over 7,000 figures.  No two are alike.  Hair styles, clothing, weapons and tools distinguish each terracotta individual.

The exhibit coming to the High this November will have more than 100 objects; 17 life-size figures of warriors, horses, and entertainers.
