May 27, 2008 Program

This morning’s guest speaker was a substitute speaker for the regularly scheduled speaker-Mr. Joe Morrison ; his wife, Mrs. Brandy Morrison.

Mrs. Morrison is an architect and volunteer for the proposed Atlanta Beltway, the largest urban redevelopment project currently underway in the United States.

The proposed beltway will ‘create a necklace’ around the center of Atlanta consisting of a 22 mile train loop’ using exiting train track, 1300 acres of new parks, 33 miles of walking and bicycle trails, jobs and economic development in 20 areas around the city, affordable workforce housing, historic preservation of old buildings, streetscapes and public art, and environmentally cleaned up tracts of land for new businesses and houses.

Why is this Beltline important?   It’s important to the city because it will improve Atlanta residents’ quality of life by parks and green space, improving transit, and encourage new business opportunities.

It will also help manage transit needs and connect Atlanta’s people to all other communities in the city by this project’s ‘visionary use of rail’.
