Imagine this…John Busby as a two year old toddler going to The Children’s Museum of Atlanta in Centennial Olympic Park with his parents while licking an armadillo shaped lolly pop. Pretty mind boggling, eh!
And so was this morning’s guest speaker, Ms. Karen Kelly, of the Atlanta Children’s Museum and her two colleagues.
Imagine it! Children aged 2 years and up can learn, play, and explore to their heart’s content. With The Atlanta Children’s Museum’s basic philosophy that ‘young children learn through play’, a child’s ‘wildest imagination can run free’. Their most creative dreams can become a reality. A child’s idea of fun and play come to life. And the best part of the ‘equation’ is all programming and projects at the museum are guided by educators and childhood development professionals.
This museum is a place where children eight and under can learn and explore together with other children and with their grown-ups in a safe, fun, hands-on environment. There are no “do not touch” signs at this museum. Everything there is for the active, creative minds of young children so they can learn, invent, and play. It is an ‘open, interactive area’ filled with unique, entertaining and educational areas to explore. Weather a child wants to climb a tree house, build sand castles with ‘extraordinary sand’ found nowhere else, there are ‘infinite opportunities for ‘broadening’ a young child’s mindset by learning, creating, and playing in a ‘one-of-a kind’ museum setting.
The current museum exhibit is called “Under the Big Top”. You are the ‘ring master’ who orchestrates the goings on at ‘your circus’ in the museum. This exhibit was built in the scene shop of Georgia Shakespeare Theater. It encompasses approximately 2,500 square feet and costs over $150,000, and has a 20 minute educational circus play.

This exhibit is presented at the museum with the proud sponsorship of the Coca-Cola Foundation, the ING foundation, and the Rich Foundation. Media sponsorship is by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Major funding is provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council.
