This morning’s guest speaker was Mr. Kevin green, executor of the Atlanta
Clean Air Campaign.
He made the following points:
- Transportation and Air Quality are affecting Atlanta:
family budgeting…high
gasoline and energy costs
quality of life
health
- Air Quality of Atlanta:
Air quality of Atlanta is decreasing and
we are spending more funds, but the population of Atlanta is soaring, therefore
the quality is still decreasing
- The Clean Air Campaign has a budget of ten million dollars that addresses
everything from cleaning up smoke stack emissions to car and truck
exhausts
- Progress has been made since 1968 statistics, but the city’s population
and the number of vehicles keeps increasing
- Commuting in Atlanta:
40 miles…Average round trip to work and home

minutes…Average round trip time
- Moving closer to places of employment:
Atlanta population is either
living and working in town or living and working in suburbs…’In towners’
and suburbanites are staying in their communities to work and play
- Employer change of attitude:
Use of car pools
Van pools
Flex
work hours
Four day workweeks with longer hours
EPA ‘custom tailoring’
for businesses work schedules for employees
- Clean Commute:
EPA paying commuters $3 per day up to $180 per year
for businesses which keep travel logs of employees conserving energy while
commuting
- Tax Credits for businesses using tele-commuting
- 21st century…more tele-working coming…long distance computer working
to defray energy costs and increase employee productivity
Special Guest
Mr. Joe Nopp from Austria attended this morning’s meeting. He’s a Kiwanis
member in his country having held the position of Club president, Secretary,
and European Kiwanis Councilmember. He is a university professor on holiday
here in the United States with his family. He presented our Club with
a Patch for our banner.
Georgia District Convention
It was held in Peachtree City this past weekend. John Nix ferried everyone
around in his golf cart. No amendments were passed, says Club President
Sherry Neal, but look for some changes in the future.
Lake House Party
Tim Kercheval and his wife Jan will host a party at their lake house September
6th. More information coming…be prepared to ‘walk the plank’.

Genesis Shelter Project
Holiday decorating and adopting families for the holidays are high on the
list of things yet to be done at the shelter. 18 families are currently
in the shelter. More information to follow.
Genesis Shelter Cleanup/Paint Day
The date august 23rd is fast approaching. Come volunteer to help cleanup
and paint up the shelter. More information coming
Volunteers are needed to watch the children while the parents attend a required
parenting class at the shelter. How are your babysitting skills?
