This morning’s guest speaker was Mr. Gould B. Hagler, a member of Board of Trustees of the organization called the “Georgia Civil War Heritage.”
What is the Georgia Civil War Heritage you ask? The Heritage is a non-profit organization, ‘armed with’ a grant from the U.S. transportation Department, dedicated to the development of Civil War trails throughout the United States. Along these trails, metal “interpretive markers” will be placed to tell the history of the events which occurred at these sites during the Civil War.
These trails are not pedestrian walkways. They are hundreds of miles long and designed to be driven. Five major trails in all, stretching from the Deep South to along the Eastern seaboard.
The “Georgia Civil War Heritage” organization plans to have all the needed signage in place between the years 2011 and 2015, the civil War’s sesquicentennial anniversary.
So many battles took place during the Civil War. But Sherman’s ‘March to the Sea’ seems to overshadow other important and interesting facts and battles during this conflict from 1861-1865. As the war progressed, Union soldiers sweep through areas ‘engaging the Confederate armies’ and left many bits of history of this conflict along the way. On these trails a great deal of history will be presented for tourists to read.
Sherman’s march was only one major campaign in the war. Other events in the war only seem like a ‘footnote’ to that event. But much more history is written about other events and the Georgia World Heritage wants to make sure signs are in place to show the public where all Civil war history took place.
Many people do not realize Georgia is second only to Virginia in the number of Civil War events that took place during this war. Planners hope these signs will help heighten interest in the Civil War and possibly bring more tourists to Georgia and other states.
