Past Speakers - 2005

Date Presenter/Topic
01/04/2005 Jan Nelson of Second Wind Dreams. Second Wind Dreams fulfills the dreams of those living in elder care communities, enhancing their quality of life and improving the perception of aging - Now this is not what you think; it's not serving ice cream and cookies at a nursing facility, but rather, Second Wind Dreams make dreams come true for our older citizens.

The dream of Virginia, 86 years young, who hadn't played violin since high school, but her love for symphony had always been strong. She dreamed of conducting a symphony, and that is what she did! -- There's Flossie, Born to be Wild, and just one month shy of her 100th birthday, acted wild. Ready for her first motorcycle ride, in a pink leather jacket she rode first in the sidecar but wasn't satisfied there. She wanted to be on the motorcycle with the engine running - and the smile said it all! -- and there was the time Catherine, at 99 years young, dreaded the fact that she didn't graduate from Emory where she had begun in 1927. She's now the newest graduate.

Maybe the dream is to fly in a biplane - it happened. Or maybe even to perform in a circus - it's happened. There's Gracie, 100 years young, remembering the days of the horse and buggy. Her dream was again to ride; she had the Buggy Ride of Dreams at the First Annual Celebration of Dreams. There was William who changed the perception of aging showing what an 88 year old can do. He entertained the crowed by singing with the jazz band, and Everett, with his sunglasses on, with dreams of catching the big one - and he may just do it! The smell of the salt water and the mist in his face took him back to his younger years and all his fishing skills came right back.

Our speaker, Jan Nelson, will tell us about Second Wind Dreams which makes individual dreams come true.

01/11/2005 Sadie Holt - Rosie the Riveters - the women of WWII. The men were at war across both oceans, and the women of the time stepped forward. A typical story is that of Eloise Strom, a young mother of two young boys, who rose every morning before dawn and rode one and a half hours in a carpool with five other women to work at the aircraft plant in Marietta - it was World War II. Food was rationed, first come, first served. Get there late and there would be no flour, no sugar, no milk, no coffee no hamburger for dinner tonight. "It seemed like everything was hard in those days," recalled Strom, a spry 90 year old who lives in Buckhead and worked at the old Bell Bomber plant. Six million American women worked in war factories and, regardless of what their specific jobs might have been, they became known as Rosie the Riveters. The national movement to remember the riveters happens to be based in Georgia, home of the 1,400-member American Rosie the Riveters Association.

Our speaker will be Sadie Holt, 73 years young, President of the Georgia Chapter of Rosie the Riveter Association. As we recently celebrated the 63rd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the organization is now honoring those American Women who "pitched in" while the men were at war, a wartime effort which changed history.

01/18/2005 Fred Powers, Channel 46 Reporter - the man who will do anything for a story. WGCL - TV reporter, Fred Powers, has been set on fire, bitten by a dog, hit by a Taser - all in the name of news. No wonder he is being dubbed the "human piñata" by TV wags. He is, without a doubt, the king of stunt reporters. "They're not just stunt stories", Powers countered. "We're telling stories that have impact."
01/25/2005 Scott Docker - CEO of PBD, INC. The Ethics in Business Award given annually by Georgia State University and the Atlanta Chapter Society for Financial Services Professionals, selected PBD as its honoree for the year in a highly competitive process. Our speaker will tell us about his company and what it did and the manner it conducts business all of which resulted in it being the recipient of the Annual Ethics Award - PBD's approach to business ethics.
02/01/2005 Susan Crawley - Associate Curator of Folk Art at the High Museum. It was recently a big moment for folk art in Atlanta as the High Museum of Art announced a major gift and a new folk art curator - do you really know what Folk Art is? Many of do not. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about Folk Art as well as learn about this recent contribution which is a prize collection worth several hundred thousand dollars. Our speak will be Susan Mitchell Crawley, recently appointed Associate Curator of Folk Art at the High Museum.
02/08/2005 Steven Mataro - Servant Builders Foundation, Inc. Our speaker, Steven Mataro, established Servant Builders Foundation which works in conjunction with municipal authorities and other public and private organizations to rehabilitate young men who are potential offenders who have been involved in the judicial system, and whose problems relate to alcohol and/or drug substance abuse. Steve's Foundation brings these young men in and houses them in a clean alcohol and drug free environment, trains them in a construction related skill and then, not only trains, but finds a job for each person so that they will not be sent back into their old circumstance. You'll have an opportunity to meet Steve and see what one person in industry has done that is helping many. The Foundation's idea is to develop within these young men a sense of value, a sense of worth and an ability to work.
02/15/2005 Randy Dean - Esperanto?! - Do you know what Esperanto is? Very few of you may know. Is it - something you can eat or can you drive it, or maybe it is something to see, or even something you can speak - come join us and learn all about it!

Randy Dean was deep in conversation with a group that meets regularly at Athens Pizza in Decatur; no one within ear shot could possibly understand anything that they said. Between mouthfuls of Greek salad and fried potato, they relish the words that come tripping off their tongue.

They were speaking a strangely musical language made up of gutturals and trills, of hard rat-a-tat-tat consonants and abundant syllable-stretching vowels. The language sounds seem to have bubbled forth, fully formed from an odd corner of the world that doesn't exist. Which, in fact, is the case with this language - this is Esperanto.

Esperanto was created by a Polish oculist in the late 1800's to serve as an international language. He derived the name from the Latin word "hope" - and the language may be somewhat similar to Latin in that it is an unspoken language, partially forgotten.

But it is not unspoken. There is a very active neighborhood of some 20,000 Esperantists in the United States, a country that has never been quick to cotton to new languages. And, once a month here in Atlanta, there is a group that meets for lunch to spend their time, rain or shine, speaking Esperanto.

And when our speaker finishes you can say to him "Gis la revido!" - Goodbye.

02/22/2005 Sadie Holt - Rosie the Riveters - the women of WWII.

03/01/2005 Clarence Harrison - Have any of you here in the club ever served time in jail - or have any of you ever visited a jail? Can you imagine serving seventeen years of your life in jail for something you didn't do?

Clarence Harrison stood in front of a bank of cameras on the steps of the DeKalb County Courthouse almost five months ago - he was a free man, having been free for just a few minutes after seventeen years in Georgia prisons. DNA testing proved that he did not commit the rape for which he was convicted. Clarence now speaks to many groups telling them of the cold horrors of prison life, but even more importantly, telling them his story. He recounted his life of petty juvenile offences, stealing clothes and beer, smoking a reefer from age 12 on, skipping school to gamble, and fighting, always fighting - and when someone pointed the finger at him, no one would believe him when he told the truth.

Now out of prison, married to a woman who befriended him by phone and mail while in prison, he is trying today to tell his story to others so that they will not fall into the same trap trying to tell young people how they can - how they must avoid a similar trap.

This will be a wonderful, inspirational program that we all will enjoy. This probably is a program that we will want to share with many of our youngsters.

03/08/2005 Dr. Barbara Rothbaum, - What are your fears - are you afraid of being on that 44th floor building - are you afraid to fly - well "science fiction" is here! Beam me up Scottie - put on the helmet, you're now on the 44th floor ledge looking over and peering at the street below. But realistically, you're only on a step five inches high.

Do you know people who have a fear of heights, possibly a fear of flying or are you afraid to stand in front of a group to speak? The world of science - may even seem like science fiction - is here with a new form of treatment. Our speaker, who directs the Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program at Emory's School of Medicine, in conjunction with a Georgia Tech computer scientist, developed software and technology (hardware as well) as a means of treating fears through virtual reality.

This idea for treatment of psychiatric problems, psychological disorders and other problems was developed by Dr. Rothbaum. As is obviously, it is difficult to take a person to a 44 story building and try to cure his fears; there are many potential problems that exist. And the guy or gal who is afraid to board that flight - it certainly would take hours and hours and a great deal of expense to take someone on flights to cure a fear of flying. But, with virtual reality, the patient is in the office with a virtual airplane which takes off and lands within a regular thirty-five minute therapy session. There is even a virtual audience for public speaking fears.

Get your science fiction books out, read Michael Crichton and other science fiction authors, then come to Kiwanis and see the same virtual reality at Kiwanis and find out how, with a virtual environment, a patient is taken to the source of his fears in a realistic "believed" environment. All you need is a virtual reality headset and software and a cure is underway.

03/15/2005 Joshua H. Batchelder -- scientific handwriting analysis. It's going to be a fun presentation because it's going to be interactive - I have samples from a group of you which I will forward to our speaker. He will have made an analysis before the program, those among others he'll discuss - who knows, your writing sample may reveal you to be the next U.S. President or possibly the last member of the Jessie James gang. You may find out something about yourself that you really didn't know.

Graphoanalysis can be defined in several ways - just as can psychology or intelligence. It's a tool that can be used successfully for assessment of personality traits; increasingly a great number of companies are utilizing graphoanalysis as an additional tool. Personnel directors and supervisors have found graphoanalysis to be a valuable tool for personal selection and placement - would you like to learn about yourself - it might be surprising.

03/22/2005 Peachtree-Atlanta Business Meeting. The Membership Committee, chaired by Sherry Neal, will present the Committee's plan to revitalize our club's membership and its quest for new members. This will be a very important meeting - housekeeping which is essential. Every member is urged to be present. President Ray wants the club to embark on a membership drive energized with bold new initiatives. The Membership Committee and the club officers urge you to attend this club meeting.
03/29/2005 Dr. Michael Niemier -- Nanotechnology - small, small, small wonders. Welcome to the world of runaway gray goo, molecular mushrooms, laser tweezers and self-cleaning clothing. It's a universe where the very small is really big and it is closer than you may think.

Nanotechnology is the brave new world of atomic-scale engineering in which the ability to assemble individual atoms like Lego blocks will transform science, medicine and even your golf game. Futurists envision a world of individually customized cars assembled molecule by molecule, surgery performed by cell-sized robot. Nanotechnology will let us make super computers to fit on the head of a pin - a fleet and fleets of medical nanobots, smaller than a human cell, able to eliminate cancer, infections, clogged arteries and even old age - hey, this sounds great!

Is this some Buck Rogers futuristic nonsense? - No, this is present and existing - technology and research that is taking place here at Georgia Tech., in its new Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology - you think it's all something of the future and not reality? At less exotic levels, Nanotechnology has already wormed its way quietly into some aspects of our daily lives. Chips for computers and cell phones contain nanoscale circuits. Stain resistant cotton kakis are impregnated with Nanosized particles which cause liquids to roll off. Nanoparticles and fibers not only are found in your new Mercedes, but also give that extra bounce to your tennis balls and more power to your golf clubs in the trunk of your car. Again, science fiction becomes reality. Nanotechnology could be the next industrial revolution!

04/05/2005 Terry Beck - "Everybody Wins". Our speaker is the Executive Director of the "Everybody Wins! Atlanta" program. Everybody Wins! Atlanta is a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting children's literacy and love of reading through shared experiences with caring adults. These experiences enhance children's self-esteem and expand their possibilities for success in school and life.

Once a week, Reading Mentors and students share conversation and good books, one-on-one, over school lunch in a reading and mentoring program named Power Lunch. Many pairs read together developing strong friendships and mentoring relationships. Volunteers come from a variety of public and private sector organizations throughout the city.

04/12/2005 Michael Cain - Writer, Owner and Publisher of Roswell Publishing Company - the newest addition Herren's - An Atlanta Landmark" by Ed Negri and Michael J. Cain. Ed's book is a biographical collection about Ed's forty plus years of operating Herren's Restaurant at 84 Luckie Street in Atlanta, Georgia. There's much about the trials and tribulations of the restaurant business and some interesting details about several historical events that happened there. We all know what an interesting person Ed is. Can you imagine Herren's under his guidance. It will certainly be an interesting story.
04/19/2005 Luís Perez-Eguiarte - Immigration and the Hispanic Community in Georgia's Industry and Commerce.

Our speaker, Luís Perez-Eguiarte, is an attorney actively involved in an immigration practice in Atlanta, Georgia. Luís is the immediate past president of the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce here in the city. He will brief us on what is happening in the "immigration world", what has changed in the last few years, and what was proposed prior to the last election and now seems to have been forgotten subsequent to the election. You will be quite surprised to learn how significant the impact of the Hispanic community is in Georgia's industry and commerce.

04/26/2005 Jeannette Rankin Foundation, speaker will be Sue Lawrence, Executive Director of Rankin Foundation - A non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for, and awarding grants to, low-income women, age 35 and older.
05/03/2005 Rachel Tobin Ramos - Atlanta Business Chronicle. When you pick up a copy of the Atlanta Business Chronicle and see a surprising story - another company moving to Atlanta to make it its headquarters - Atlanta itself, seeking an ad agency to renew and polish its image - the legislature in session -"Look out Atlanta! What's going to happen to you?" Wow!! Many times these stories are first broken by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Our speaker, Rachel Tobin Ramos, staff reporter for the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the paper's lead legislative reporter, will give us the word. We'll learn what stories that the Atlanta Business Chronicle covers - what they're looking for - and some of the "hot stories" that have been covered by our speaker. This should be a fascinating program.
5/10/2005 Paul L. Howard, Jr., Fulton County District Attorney. The latest update on the Nichols case and what's happening in the local judiciary.
5/17/2005 Paul Clements - AirTran Airlines. Our speaker, Paul Clements, is AirTran's General Manager for Sales. We'll learn about expanded routes, new programs and how this successful discount airlines is making the "big boys" in the industry hop!
5/24/2005 John Grant, Executive Director of 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. The Atlanta Chapter of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is one of the largest of the 103 Chapters of this organization. The 100's core initiatives relate to education which relies heavily on volunteer time and monetary support from its base members. It's membership list is a "Who's Who of Black Atlanta", it starts with Hank Aaron and ends with Andrew Young. In the past year the Atlanta group signed a multimillion dollar title sponsorship deal with Bank of America Corporation for its Signature Charitable Football Classic as well as multiyear sponsorship deals with Georgia Power Company, McDonald's Corporation and other major corporate organizations. The group is significantly involved in charity and certainly has an eye toward smart marketing. This will be an interesting presentation.
5/31/2005 Herbert Kohn - Holocaust Survivor. It has now been sixty years since the end of World War II and the liberation of the Nazi Germany death camps. The Holocaust, probably the most horrific event in the last century or probably the last many centuries, will be remembered at our May 31 meeting. How did it happen? How did we all let it happen? Could it happen again - could it happen here? We'll actually learn on a first hand basis - certainly not a pleasant subject, but one that we all need to know and remember.
6/7/2005 Dr. Mark Johnson - Organ Transplant - live liver tissue transplants - What a topic for a morning breakfast meeting, but don't get turned off. Organ transplant is an issue that is too often not discussed. It is an issue that is being wrestled with by all religious groups - and today there is a great need for organs that is not being met.

-- But liver transplant - this is a major medical breakthrough. Our speaker, a new resident to Atlanta, is the new director of that department at Piedmont Hospital. Under his direction (and steady hand) Piedmont Hospital had its first live liver transplant just last month - live liver tissue transplants may be the life saver to those certain death situations of the past. This will be a fascinating program.

6/14/2005 Dale Russell, FOX5 News Investigative Reporter. Look out - the light may be shining on you. There's no place to hide because FOX5 I-Team is looking! The I-Team is Atlanta's biggest and most honored investigative team and heading up that team is Dale Russell, our speaker for Tuesday morning.

The I-Team's in-depth investigations have sent people to jail, recovered more than a million tax dollars, changed laws and protected countless consumers from scams. Dale is the I-Team's government watchdog. His stories focus on fraud in government, criminal wrongdoing, and ethical violations by public officials. Dale, a former magazine writer and radio reporter, has spent 15 years investigating some of Atlanta's biggest stories for FOX5. His stories have changed laws, resulted in arrests and prompt government action - Dale has broken important stories covering some of the nation's high profile crimes from Atlanta's Missing and Murdered Children, the Olympic Park bombing, to terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

6/21/2005 June 21 - Chris Adams - Director of the Georgia Capital Defense Program. As the Director of the Georgia Capital Defense Program, Chris is involved with Capital cases throughout the state. Many smaller countries now turn to his office for support which is resulting in a greater number of Capital cases - where before, these counties didn't have the manpower or resources to handle these cases, they are now bringing them and relying on the state. An item of immediate interest, our speaker is defending Brian Nichols, the alleged courthouse murderer. This should indeed be an interesting program.
6/28/2005 June 28 - Jeff Swanagan - Director of the Georgia Aquarium. Bring your swimming togs, little sand bucket and shovel, we may be going for a swim - or at least we'll hear about a big swim, the Georgia Aquarium and its newest residents - inhabitants - who are in the tank swimming around waiting to entertain us - Ralph and Norton, whale sharks who are the newest addition for the planned Georgia Aquarium. Our speaker, Jeff Swanagan, is the Director of the Aquarium. He will give us a full report on the Aquarium and a peek of what is in store for us at the Aquarium. The Georgia Aquarium, as I'm sure you probably know, will be the largest aquarium in the United States and will set standards for aquariums throughout the world, and Ralph and Norton will have a positive impact upon the Aquarium and certainly, upon our enjoyment, and the study of endangered species conservation efforts.
7/5/2005 Pat Jones - Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. The day just starts off wrong - it's a "bad hair day" - or - the sun is shining, the birds are singing - or - ug! I'm just too fat - I don't like her - I ... Well, maybe we don't realize how much our emotions, relationships, desires, etc. are driven by our sub-conscious mind - hypnosis - will it help?
7/12/2005 Alexander Lostocco - Internships for America - Students and young professionals needed help on one side and corporations needed help on the other side - so developed Internships for America, an organization to create a more diverse international work environment that benefits companies while exposing talented young people to the American workplace. Truly a win/win situation!

Our speaker, Al Lostocco, is President of Internships for America; he founded the Atlanta-based company in 1998. The company brings students and young professionals from Europe, Asia and South America and places them as interns in U.S. businesses. There are currently 40 to 50 interns, most work in metropolitan Atlanta, who are now being placed throughout the southeast and as far west as Texas. Al has expanded the organization's activities with a new book on the topic "U.S. Internship" for international students and young professionals. It includes tips on the U.S. work environment and even offers a guide for common American slang terms.

Employers include hotels, resort companies, law firms, management firms, restaurants and businesses in the technology field. Interns are placed with companies where their skills will be most useful.

We'll hear about some of the fun things that happen and some of the unusual experiences which are the result of the clash of cultures. This should be a fascinating program and it may be of interest to some of your businesses.

7/19/2005 Joe Kelly, "Spiritual Warfare and Shakespeare's MacBeth"
7/26/2005 Mack Secord, Angel of Flight. Sometimes the best medical treatment can require a trip to the heavens - an Angel Flight. Angel Flight is a volunteer organization where pilots remove the obstacle of transportation for patients in medical and financial crisis. This group of individuals believe that the cost of travel or out-of-the-way locations should never stand in the way of life-saving treatment nor should providing transportation of tissue, corneas, supplies and medical personnel be lost simply because of limited transportation or finances.

Angel Flight started in 1983 as a loosely organized group of volunteer pilots that helped out patients whenever they could. Due to increased media coverage in 1990 and an alliance with several other similar organizations, Angel Flight has taken off. Since 1990, Angel Flight of Georgia has tripled in volunteers and more than tripled in yearly missions flown.

Our speaker will be Mack Secord - a fellow Kiwanian - a volunteer pilot. He will be with us to explain who they are, what they do and how they do it. This group of volunteer pilots fly so that no one is denied potentially life-saving medical treatment simply because they cannot afford the travel costs. Truly, they are a group of Angels!

8/2/2005 Allen O'Reilly - Education Director at Georgia Shakespeare - Have you ever dreamed of taking center stage and delivering the immortal words of William Shakespeare - well, there is a chance. Our speaker is designing curriculums for people of all ages with the Bard of Avon. Whether you're 4 or 84, there's a program for you. It started this summer with the young set, ages 4 to 8, who were invited to performances staged by high school students in this summer's "Boot Camp Shakespeare". Allen is taking a show to elementary schools around the area this fall where his troupe will perform a bilingual work he wrote, "Miguel's Shakespearean Adventure", which draws a parallel between the English author and Cervantes. Boy, what a lot of activity that is going on - and don't worry, us old folks are not forgotten either. The city's oldest Shakespearean devotees are going to be part of our speaker's agenda. Beginning in September he'll hold Shakespeare for Seniors aimed at people 55 years and older.

Whether you're 4 or 84 or anywhere in between there may be a place for you at center stage. This will be a fascinating program - who knows, we may even find an outlet for our own Macbeth, Hamlet or King Lear.

8/9/2005 Mike Garrett - President and CEO of Georgia Power - this should be a powerful program.
8/16/2005 Georgia Lt. Governor, Mark Taylor - This may be the kick-off of a campaign season and certainly can be the kick-off for us as we begin to hear from various candidates over the next several months.
8/23/2005 Ann Taylor Boutwell - Docent at Margaret Mitchell House. All you have ever wanted to know about Margaret Mitchell - but were afraid to ask.
8/30/2005 Air Museum on the Runway -- Robert B. Ormsby, Jr., former CEO of Lockheed.
9/6/2005 International Community School - Our speaker, William L. Moon, the Principal of the International School which was established in 2002. The school, a DeKalb County charter school, primarily serves immigrant and refugee children and there also are U.S. children in the school. The International Community School works with the children so that they will be successful in all levels by helping them academically and in their adaptation to American life. These children, and certainly the local children, will learn more about the world than most people learn when they travel.
9/13/2005 Officer of the Year Recognition - Our speak will be Chief Richard James Pennington, Atlanta Police Department. We'll honor the 2004 Officer of the Year.
9/20/2005 Edward Lindsey - Our speaker, Edward Lindsey, who is a Georgia State Representative from District 54, representing Buckhead and northern part of the city area, was a true mover and shaker in the adoption of the legislation that enabled Sandy Springs to vote itself into being as a city. This will be an interesting presentation for all of us as now the new City of Sandy Springs affects not just the Sandy Springs citizens, but the entire county and probably the metropolitan area. This will be an opportunity to learn the whys, the wherefores and how it all was brought about. Probably, we'll learn a bit of the backroom bargaining which made the City of Sandy Springs possible. Certainly of interest will be the impact that this will have upon those of us who live in Sandy Springs and for the county at large.
9/27/2005 Donna Carson - "My House". This program should be particularly interesting in view of the fact that our club has adopted the "My House" project as one of its own for the upcoming year. My House takes care of children who are medically fragile; it takes these children in when they leave the hospital or medical facility and cares for them when they have no place to go. They remain at My House until permanent arrangements can be made. There's a small staff but literally hundreds of volunteers that work with My House. My House was featured on the Oprah Show earlier this year. This will be a great presentation for us.
10/4/2005 Peachtree-Atlanta Annual Club Business Meeting. President Ray will review his year now ending and President Sandy will bring us up to speed on the year beginning.
10/11/2005 John Feight - President of Hospital Art Foundation. Our speaker, John Feight, faced the challenge of his life when he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. Thirty-seven radiation treatments later, Feight is about to tackle another great obstacle - climbing Mount Fuji, Japan's highest peak. Next month the 65 year old Roswell artist and founder of the Foundation for Hospital Art, and a few others from the United States, will join 40 Japanese cancer survivors making the adventurous trek. The Foundation was formed in 1984 to give comfort and hope to patients, their families and medical staff in hospitals and nursing homes. To-date thousands of paintings have been donated to medical facilities in 166 countries from the United States to Afghanistan. Art can be therapeutic for people who are ill or who have suffered trauma through a disaster or conflict. But wait, who are the artists - volunteers come from all walks of life - from professionals, students, housewives and people struggling with substance addiction using art and sharing it with others as a therapy? Now, what about the trek up Mount Fuji? Our speaker said that the group will have more than 700 paint brushes and 250 pounds of paint at its disposal. As our speaker leaves Japan, he then goes to Korea where he will take part in another paint fest. We'll learn all about the Hospital Art Foundation, how it came about and how we can become involved in it and - hopefully, we'll learn about our speakers experience climbing Mount Fuji.
10/18/2005 Arnold Silverman - former President of Winter Construction Company and currently CEO of Silverman Construction Management Company will speak to us. Silverman Construction Management serves non-profit organizations meeting project managers and advisors for Capital Construction programs. He will speak to us primarily about the roll of non-profit organizations play in Atlanta, the changing character of Atlanta at the street level, and a way of doing business - positive attitude with strong ethics.
10/25/2005 Barnie Simms - Children's Advocacy.
11/1/2005 Lewis Regenstein - is a native Atlantian with a direct tie to the Civil War. Just picture this in your mind - the war is ending, yet there is one final order that must be carried out. Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox about three weeks earlier on the 9th of April, 1865, and the Civil War had basically ended. Major Raphael Jacob Moses of Columbus (coincidentally, who is known as the father of Georgia's peach industry) was given the final order - take possession of the last measure of the Confederacy wealth -- $40,000.00 in silver and/or gold bullion, (worth perhaps $750,000.00 today) and deliver most of it to Augusta to help the thousands of defeated Rebel soldiers straggling home, many of them shoeless, hungry and sick. The adventure unfolds from there. This is a story that could well be the subject of an adventurous movie - an exciting tale about the end of the War Between the States - and with a direct tie to Atlanta.
11/8/2005 John Sampson - Sixty years has slipped by since World War II ended with the formal surrender by Japan on the USS Missouri in August of 1945. Admiral John Sidney McCain, Sr. was part of the military group accepting the surrender in 1945. Our speaker is the holder of recently discovered unpublished pictures of the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri in 1945. Not only the pictures, but how they came into his possession is quite a story. Our speaker's father, Navy Lieutenant William Sampson (later Captain) was the Admiral's aide; our speaker's father and entire family were and have remained close friends of the McCain family. (Incidentally, Admiral McCain is the grandfather of Sen. John S. McCain, former Republican Presidential candidate.) Admiral McCain died suddenly upon returning to the United States following the Japanese surrender, but the Sampsons remained close friends with his wife and family. Just a few years ago, when the Admiral's daughter died, John Sampson and the Admiral's niece were asked to clean out the McCain home and its attic. What turned up - unpublished pictures from the WWII surrender. John will have them with him to share them with us and some private stories of the invasion of Guadalcanal learned through his father - fresh new stories of days of the great war. You don't have to be a WWII buff to be able to enjoy these pictures taken aboard the USS Missouri at the surrender. This will give us a first hand touch and glimpse of history - history just recently revealed.
11/15/2005 Wynn Pennington - What the heck is a "negogiant"? You have quite a program in store - and maybe even a morning sip. Our speaker, Wynn Pennington, is a negogiant - he doesn't own a vineyard or winery; he doesn't live in France, Spain or even California, in fact, Wynn does business from a funky Castleberry Hill loft he shares with his wife, an artist, and their daughter. Say, we still don't know what a "negogiant" is and right now, eight of Wynn's wines are on shelves around metro Atlanta and soon the vivid labels of his Crush Pad, Wishes and Vidanueva selections will be seen in some twenty states.

Heck, what is a "negogiant" - come on the 15th of November and you will find out.

11/22/2005 Tom Shillock - The wind is crashing down upon us, the tornados, typhoons, and all other things such as that! But have no fear - Tom is here!!! Tom is a forecaster of Ozone and Particulate Matter with the metro-Atlanta Air Quality Forecasting Team. They are the folks that inform the Georgia DOT, the Weather Channel, the AJC, U.S. EPA and Georgia weather forecasters when to broadcast a "smog alert" and more - but wait...

Tom's presentation is going to tell us what caused the "perfect" hurricane - Hurricane Katrina, and why its and Hurricane Rita's devastation was so severe.

11/29/2005 George Goldman - Do you have a survival plan? If you had been in New Orleans, how would you have evacuated the city - when would you leave - how would you contact your family - suppose it were a rush evacuation, would you be ready - or another scenario, you are on a MARTA train going to the office - there is an announcement - there has been or there is a suspected terrorists attack at the airport, CDC, Lockheed and Lennox Square - what do you do - where do you take the family - and how and who do you call first?

Do you have a plan? This isn't something you see in a sci-fi movie; if you think so, check with the New Yorkers who remember 9/11 and New Orleaners who still can't get to their homes.

Do you have a survival plan?

Our speaker was quoted in a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle as saying, "One purpose of coaching is to impact the executives' performance by increasing their insight and improving their executive decision making; it's an ongoing experimental process. Advise giving isn't coaching, it doesn't allow the executive to "own" their performance. It's only by taking ownership that allows the executive to maintain that performance." - that's the aim of the Stein Group Model of executive coaching.

12/20/2005 Arthur E. Ferdinand - Fulton County Tax Commissioner. With the end of the year coming, our minds are filled with many thoughts and dreams - sugar plums, snow flakes, Santa and his reindeer - and - and - yes, TAXES!!! Oh well, put that thought in the back of your mind - tax time is not until April - and we've already paid our real estate taxes, so we don't have to be concerned with Mr. Ferdinand until next year - but wait! Why don't we find out just how that tax bill on our real estate was derived and what we can do if we are not pleased with it. This will be a great opportunity, whether you are a Fulton County resident or a resident of a neighboring county, the information from Arthur Ferdinand will be first hand and will be great information for all of us - though sugar plums might be a bit more tasty.
